At Diamond Treats:
THE FOUR C's:
Cut is a very important quality factor, and probably the most challenging, of the four Cs to understand. The brilliance of a diamond depends heavily on its cut, which give a diamond that brightness that seems to come from the very heart of the diamond. The quality of the cut is a result of just the right angles, proportions and finish of the diamond. It is the quality of the cut that gives a diamond its ability to handle light, which in turn leads to its dazzling brilliance and fire.
Almost all diamonds contain some inner flaws, or inclusions, that occur during the formation process. These inclusions are the ‘birthmarks’ of the diamond. The visibility, number and size of these inclusions determine what is called the clarity of a diamond. The inclusions interfere with the path of light through the diamond and therefore, diamonds that contain a lower degree of these inclusions create more brilliance. The better the clarity of the diamond the more expensive the diamond will be. Most inclusions in a diamond are so small that it is not possible to see them with the naked eye.
A diamond is graded based on its lack of colour. The less colour, or the more colourless a diamond is, the greater its value and its visual appeal. Diamond colour grades range as follows:
Colourless and Near Colourless diamonds are the most desirable since they allow the most refraction of light (sparkle).
Diamond Carat is the unit of weight by which a diamond is measured As diamond carat weight increases so does its value, however it is important to note that as larger diamonds are rarer than smaller ones, the value of a single diamond increases exponentially with its carat weight. Often the carat weight of a diamond is used when talking about the diamonds size. Although this is not strictly correct, naturally, as the weight of a diamond increases, so does its size, and for this reason people use Carat weight as an indication of size.
The table below shows the approximate diameter of a round and princess cut diamond as the carat weight changes:

May's birthstone is the emerald. When worn or carried, emeralds strengthen love, intelligence, eloquence, and popularity. The emerald is an especially lucky
stone for expectant mothers; pregnant women in ancient Egyptian women made a practice of wearing them.
- When worn in a ring, emeralds warn the wearer against poisons, strengthen the memory, protect against demonic possession, and ensure success in love.
- When worn by travelers, emeralds bring good luck and are known to calm storms at sea.
Emeralds are fascinating gemstones. They have the most beautiful, most intense and most radiant green that can possibly be imagined: emerald green.
Inclusions are tolerated. In top quality, fine emeralds are more valuable than diamonds. Emeralds are worn daily by millions of gemstone lovers set in
various types of Emerald Jewellery such as earrings, necklaces and rings.
Emerald’s green tones has soothed souls and excited imaginations since its inception. Its name comes from ancient Greek for green, ‘smaragdus’. Even
today, the colour green is known for relieving tension, stress and eye strain.
‘Beryls’ are the most dominant of all emeralds.
Emeralds are also believed to help cure diseases such as cholera and malaria; as the gemstones contain healing properties which also help keep evil
In ancient Egyptian culture, emeralds are considered a symbol of eternal life. Cleopatra, arguably Egypt’s most famous resident, was a huge lover of the
stone and this further immortalised when screen legend Elizabeth Taylor played the lead character opposite her future husband, Richard Burton; in the
1963 epic masterpiece.
Emeralds: As a gift
Emerald Jewellery make exceptional gifts. As a symbol of life creation, emeralds symbolizes life. Consumers are drawn to the colour because it signifies
renewal & resurrection.
Largest emerald found:
The largest emerald in the world, the Bahia, was discovered in 2014, in a Brazilian rainforest. Its value was close to £230m GBP and there was a courtroom
battle to whom, it belonged to! The Bahia Emerald, a massive black schist with nine protruding emerald crystals, was transported from Bahia to Sao Paulo,
Brazil; San Jose; New Orleans; South El Monte; and Las Vegas. It was reported that the Bahia was stranded in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and
a number of business deals failed, relationships between companies strained and promises broken. According to a US judge, after a lengthy case, the
owners were declared as FM Holdings LLC, comprising of 3 prominent businessmen. The 2nd case regarding a famous emerald, was in 2012; called the Teodora,
which was found in Brazil and cut in India, total weight; 57,500 carats; which was eventually sold to a Canadian gem dealer Regan Reaney for an
estimated $1.15m USD.
Rumour has it, also, that God gave King Solomon 4 emerald gemstones, giving him complete power over creation. It is also believed that the gem was the
first in the second row of the breastplate of the high priest Exodus; which was also imported to Tyre from Syria.
