Diamond Guide

At Diamond Treats:

  • All diamond jewellery comes with a Diamond Certificate
  • The diamond 'Colour' and 'Clarity' that we set in each item is shown clearly on the product page
  • All diamonds are of a bright white 'Colour'.
  • All diamonds are eye clean so that there are almost no inclusions visble to the naked eye
  • All diamonds are of the finest 'Cut' to ensure that you get the most sparkling diamonds in your jewellery

THE FOUR C's:

Cut

Cut is a very important quality factor, and probably the most challenging, of the four Cs to understand. The brilliance of a diamond depends heavily on its cut, which give a diamond that brightness that seems to come from the very heart of the diamond. The quality of the cut is a result of just the right angles, proportions and finish of the diamond.  It is the quality of the cut that gives a diamond its ability to handle light, which in turn leads to its dazzling brilliance and fire.

Clarity

Almost all diamonds contain some inner flaws, or inclusions, that occur during the formation process.  These inclusions are the ‘birthmarks’ of the diamond.  The visibility, number and size of these inclusions determine what is called the clarity of a diamond. The inclusions interfere with the path of light through the diamond and therefore, diamonds that contain a lower degree of these inclusions create more brilliance.  The better the clarity of the diamond the more expensive the diamond will be.  Most inclusions in a diamond are so small that it is not possible to see them with the naked eye.

Color

A diamond is graded based on its lack of colour.  The less colour, or the more colourless a diamond is, the greater its value and its visual appeal. Diamond colour grades range as follows:

  • D-F (Colourless) – These are the rarest and highest colour grade diamonds
  • G-J (Near Colourless) – These are rare diamonds still with a bright white colour
  • K-M (Faint) – These are not so rare diamonds with a slight yellow tint
  • N-R (Very Light) – These are widely available diamonds with noticeable yellow tint
  • S-Z (Light) – These grade of diamonds are plentiful in the market and therefore the lowest colour grade

Colourless and Near Colourless diamonds are the most desirable since they allow the most refraction of light (sparkle).

Carat (weight)

Diamond Carat is the unit of weight by which a diamond is measured  As diamond carat weight increases so does its value, however it is important to note that as larger diamonds are rarer than smaller ones, the value of a single diamond increases exponentially with its carat weight.  Often the carat weight of a diamond is used when talking about the diamonds size.  Although this is not strictly correct, naturally, as the weight of a diamond increases, so does its size, and for this reason people use Carat weight as an indication of size.

The table below shows the approximate diameter of a round and princess cut diamond as the carat weight changes:

July's birthstone is the ruby. Rubies symbolize success, devotion, and integrity. Ancient lore tells us that a ruby is capable of reconciling lover's quarrels.

 - A ruby engagement ring expresses passion and promise. It brings peace of mind, stimulates sexuality, removes evil and impure thoughts, banishes sorrows, and prevents nightmares.

 - A heart-shaped ruby attracts love when worn over the heart in a red velvet bag filled with seashells.

Ruby as a positive influence

Ruby is a dynamic stone said to promote enthusiasm, vigour and passion for life.  It is also believed to encourage a positive state of mind, promotes

dynamic leadership, increases self-motivation and overcomes lethargy.  Ruby is one of the most historically significant coloured stones. Rubies are

mentioned four times in the Bible, in association with attributes like beauty and wisdom.  In the language of Sanskrit, ruby is called ratnaraj, or ‘king of

precious stones’.  Rubies are the Birthstones for the month of July.

Brief history

Ruby comes from the Latin origin ruber, meaning ‘red.  The glowing red suggested an inextinguishable flame burning within the stone.

Do you know that rubies are the most sought after jewel from source?  The regal & wealthy classes had an exquisite collection of rubies.  There are

many references to these magnificent stones in Bible and ancient Indian Sanskrit texts.  It personified the symbol of power for the mighty rulers.

Burma has long continued a tradition for producing world class rubies since antiquity.  In medieval period, the Mogok mines were controlled by

Burmese kings as all stones were part of royal treasury.  As a symbol of passion, rubies are the quintessential romantic gift. Consumers are drawn

to the colour because it signifies wealth and success!

Some interesting trivia:

A giant 77 carat  ruby was discovered by Burma Ruby Mines Ltd in 1899!

In Dec 2011, Elizabeth Taylor's entire jewellery collection was sold off by auction house Christie's.  Several pieces were included in the sale, notably

a ring set with an 8.24 carat gem that broke the 'price-per-carat' record for rubies - $512,925 per carat, estimated $4.2m in total!  She also sold a ruby

necklace for over $3.7 million!

The Liberty Bell Ruby is the largest mined ruby in the world!  It was found in the 1950's in East Africa and weights around 8500 carats!  It was stolen

during a heist in 2011 and has not yet been recovered.

The Sunrise Ruby is the world's most expensive ruby!  In fact its also the most expensive coloured gemstone and the most expensive gemstone

other than a diamond!  The 'Pigeon blood' Burmese ruby weights 25.6 carats and in May 2015, it was sold at auction in Switzerland to a private buyer

for $30 million!  This ruby has been described as among the rarest of all gemstones - "a unique treatsure of nature".
