History of Sapphires

Sapphires certainly have an established history since 800BC.  Through symbolic relevance associated with good fortune, wisdom and holiness, sapphires have held not just strong virtues within royal circles but historically, have been linked with religious annotations, including Christianity’s Ten Commandments allegedly inscribed on sapphire tablets and to the Catholic Church, who believed the sky was the result of sapphire reflections.

Since their discovery, Kings have also regarded sapphires as good luck representations, honouring the gemstone with connotations associated with wise rulers and defenders of harm and witchcraft.  Sapphires have further been represented through modern royal circles, including the late Princess Diana and Princess Anne, who both received sapphire engagement rings together with the British Crown Jewels, which are dominated by large blue sapphires.

Through their historical associations and symbolic meanings, Sapphires are continuously favoured as engagement rings representing sincerity and faithfulness from the donor to the recipient.  Not just favoured through their virtues, sapphires remarkable strength (9 on the Mohs scale (qualitative ordinal scale) makes the third hardest mineral the favoured material for making scientific instruments including infrared optical components; windows; watch bearings and substrates used within integrated circuits and LED’s.
