Brief history
Emerald’s green tones have soothed souls and excited imaginations since its inception. Its name comes from ancient Greek for green, ‘smaragdus’. Even today, the colour green is known for relieving tension, stress and eye strain.
Largest emerald found:
The largest emerald in the world, the Bahia, was discovered in 2014, in a Brazilian rainforest. Its value was close to £230m GBP and there was a courtroom battle to whom, it belonged to! The Bahia Emerald, a massive black schist with nine protruding emerald crystals, was transported from Bahia to Sao Paulo, Brazil; San Jose; New Orleans; South El Monte; and Las Vegas. It was reported that the Bahia was stranded in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and a number of business deals failed, relationships between companies strained and promises broken.
According to a US judge, after a lengthy case, the owners were declared as FM Holdings LLC, comprising of 3 prominent businessmen.
The 2nd case regarding a famous emerald, was in 2012; called the Teodora, which was found in Brazil and cut in India, total weight; 57,500 carats; which was eventually sold to a Canadian gem dealer Regan Reaney for an estimated $1.15m USD.
Historical:
‘Beryls’ are the most dominant of all emeralds.
Emeralds are also believed to help cure diseases such as cholera and malaria; as the gemstones contain healing properties which also help keep evil spirits away.
In ancient Egyptian culture, emeralds are considered a symbol of eternal life. Cleopatra, arguably Egypt’s most famous resident, was a huge lover of the stone and this further immortalised when screen legend Elizabeth Taylor played the lead character opposite her future husband, Richard Burton; in the 1963 epic masterpiece.
Emeralds: As a gift
Emerald Jewellery makes exceptional gifts. As a symbol of life creation, emeralds symbolize life. Consumers are drawn to the colour because it signifies renewal & resurrection.
Biblical references:
Rumour has it, also, that God gave King Solomon 4 emerald gemstones, giving him complete power over creation. It is also believed that the gem was the first in the second row of the breastplate of the high priest Exodus; which was also imported to Tyre from Syria.
